The Red Light camera often looks like a speed camera, however it performs a very different job.
Red Light Cameras are situated 10-20 meters behind the white stop line at traffic lights and are linked to the traffic light control box. The camera becomes armed when the traffic lights turn red. Much like the Truvelo speed camera red light cameras use piezo pressure strips embedded in the tarmac. If a vehicle passes over these strips when the lights are red, the sensors activate the camera and photographs are taken as evidence that you have crossed a red light.
There are three very popular types of red light camera. The Gatso™ type 36 (pictured left), Peek Traffic Traffiphot™ and the RedSpeed Redguard™ camera. RedSpeed RedGuard cameras look identical to RedSpeed speed cameras.
