The Spike™ speed camera system is brand new and is not Home Office Type Approved at the time of writing. It was submitted for home office type approval at the latter end of 2006 and is undergoing testing. This could soon become another weapon in the camera partnerships armoury.
The Spike™ camera uses infra red and ANPR (automatic numberplate recognition) technology to monitor the speed of a vehicle over longer distances than traditional speed cameras. It uses patented filtering and multi level flash technology to detect and record speeding vehicles. The camera is very small and can be held in the hand easily. They are also relatively cheap compared to other systems costing around £20,000 each.
