A Typical UK Fixed Speed Camera

Speed Traps and Cameras

There are an array of different systems available to catch speeding motorists. In the UK these devices have to be approved by the Home Office before they can be used by Police or by Safety Camera Partnerships. This system of approval is called Home Office Type Approval, or HOTA for short.

It’s worth remembering that speeding is a criminal offence that requires the Police / Camera Partnerships to produce evidence that is admissible in court. This may include photographic evidence from speed cameras, laser guns or calibrated speedometers. Simply seeing a car that looks as though it is travelling in excess of the marked speed limit is not sufficient.

In the links above we have included information on some of the more common speed traps & systems. Some are HOTA approved and some are new devices that have yet to receive HOTA approval.
