Truvelo™ Cameras

Truvelo™ speed cameras work slightly differently to Gatso™ & Redspeed™ cameras. What distinguishes Truvelo is that it takes photographs of the front of speeding vehicle (including the driver) rather than the rear.

How it works

Truvelo Camera

The Truvelo™ cameras are often painted blue but may also be painted yellow or grey. They are sometimes nicknamed 'pink eyes' because of the pink/purple lens on the front of the camera. The camera uses a magenta filter over the flash lens to prevent dazzle when it goes off. Truvelo measures the speed of the vehicle using hidden pressure strips in the road surface called piezo strips. Speed is measured by calculating the time it takes for the vehicle to pass between these strips. If the vehicle is travelling too quickly photos are taken almost instantly.

Technologies used

Piezo transponders - Infrared camera.

Truvelo™ Facts

Model: Combi Smc™
Manufactured by Truvelo(UK) Ltd.

Home Office Typed Approved in 1999.

In some countries evidence of the drivers identity is essential for a speeding conviction, therefore Truvelo cameras are more common abroad than in the UK. However, Truvelo is in active use in the UK.

If you are caught by a Truvelo™ you may not notice it flash. This is because in certain light conditions it is hard to see the flash because it is filtered using a magenta lens cover.
